Common Etiologies:
- Autism/PDD
- Cerebral Palsy
- Pre maturity/Development Delay
- Feeding/Oral-motor difficulties
- Voice
- Fluency
- Functional articulation
- phonological
- language disorders.
Consult Pediatrics First Therapy when:
- A child has difficulty expressing needs/wants or routine information intelligibly.
- A child's communication skills inhibit them from communicating independently for their expected age.
- A child's speech intelligibility and/or language abilities (including reading & writing) inhibit them from performing successfully in and educational environment.
- A child demonstrates sensory-integration difficulties and is unable to progress successfully from liquid to to solid foods
- A child with known respiratory, neurological, and/or structural abnormalities with delayed chronological development across the speech, language, voice, or feeding /oral motor areas.
- A child has an abnormally "hoarse" or "harsh" vocal quality for an extended amount of time. (Clearance from an ENT is mandatory prior to initiation of voice therapy).
- A child demonstrates significant difficulty with fluency of speech and is known to "stutter".
- A child residing in a bilingual household demonstrates communication delays in both languages.
